HotDoc hot to trot for Victoria

4 June 2021

Melbourne-based online appointment booking and patient engagement platform HotDoc went on the front foot this week in a call to the Victorian government to consider its platform for the ramped-up COVID-19 vaccination program, which is now being extended to 40-49 year olds. It is even offering its solution to the Victorian government for free and reckons it can stand something up in 48 hours to help Victorians get vaccinated.

That’s a far cry from Microsoft’s efforts, which despite being awarded a $5 million contract for a vaccine management solution for Victoria last year still hasn’t yet gone live. This platform is more than just a booking solution but you’d have to say come on, Microsoft. It’s June already. We know that alternatives have been put into action in the meantime – Cerner, for instance, has been offering its solution to health service customers in Victoria for Phase 1a – but it beggars belief that Microsoft has been unable to get its solution sorted in the meantime.

eHealth NSW rolling out eTOC interoperability between ICU and wards

3 June 2021

eHealth NSW plans to roll out its new electronic transfer of care (eTOC) medications reconciliation application to the rest of the state following successful pilots in four hospitals in NSW of the system, which automates the workflow of checking medication orders as patients move from intensive care units to wards.

eTOC is a web-based application using FHIR APIs and the CSIRO’s Snapper and Ontoserver terminology systems and has been developed internally by eHealth NSW to act as a bridge between the electronic record for intensive care (eRIC) and the statewide electronic medical record (eMR).

eRIC uses iMDSoft’s MetaVision ICU system, while the eMR is Cerner’s Millennium. The first phase of the project is enabling the transfer of medication orders as patients are discharged from ICU to the wards, which was previously done manually between eRIC and eMR. There are future plans to enable similar workflows from wards to ICU.

Sympathy following massive attacks

21 May 2021

It was not a great week for cyber security in healthcare around the world as malicious actors let loose, taking out Waikato DHB’s IT systems on Tuesday and having a go at the Alaskan Department of Health later in the week. Those incidents follow the massive attack on Ireland’s healthcare service last week, which was described by its CEO as catastrophic and affected the whole country. It is still recovering, but so is the Scripps Health network in San Diego, which continues to struggle two weeks later.

Early reports linked the perpetrators of the Irish attack to Waikato but that has since been disputed by the Ministry of Health, and it is still not clear who or what is responsible. One unexpected consequence has been disruption to the DHB’s payroll system – not only are clinicians having to revert to pen and paper, but the beancounters are too. The Victorian health system, which has had its fair share of cyber issues in the last few years, got a bit of cash in Thursday’s state budget to fix some of its cyber gaps, including money for next generation anti-virus protections, a Security Operations Centre, and a recovery service in the event of a successful attack.

NZ auditor’s report warns of just-in-time nature of immunisation program IT roll-out

Little’s promise for technology in healthcare

23 April 2021

Sweeping changes are afoot in the New Zealand healthcare sector, with the government this week announcing its response to last year’s Health and Disability System Review report. Using technology to deliver better access and better outcomes is high on the agenda, and Health Minister Andrew Little seems keen to emphasise how digital tools can help achieve long wished for goals like bringing services closer to people’s homes and communities, reducing duplication and improving IT procurement practices, and ensuring patients don’t have to share the same information time and time again.

IT support for vaccinations rolls out

16 April 2021

We are still not sure how Australia’s vaccine roll-out can be both on a war footing while at the same time definitely not a race, but things are moving along both in Australia and New Zealand in the early stages of each country’s mass vaccination plans.

The New Zealand Ministry of Health’s deputy director-general for digital and data Shayne Hunter announced yesterday that MOH will release a national booking system for its roll-out at the end of next month.
