The pathology industry is upgrading the use of HL7 version 2 messaging and standard terminologies to improve the safety and consistency of messaging for requests and reports and to improve interoperability. The consistent use of communication standards is now a requirement for laboratory accreditation.

IHE Australia has released a draft the Australian pathology messaging profile (LTWau) for public comment, with feedback due by 7 August 2026.  The profile and comments sheet can be downloaded at IHE Australia  profile for pathology messaging (LTWau)

The LTWau profile consolidates National Pathology Accreditation Advisory Council requirements for HL7 version 2 messaging, based on ADRM 2021.1, the Australian localisation of the international HL7 version 2.4 messaging standard, with the implementation of standard pathology terminology through RCPA SPIA.

It is intended to provide a clearer, coordinated approach to applying the existing requirements for electronic pathology orders and results, bringing the relevant messaging and terminology specifications together in a single implementation profile, along with provision of tools and testing events to validate messaging conformance.

Following consultation, the profile is expected to enter a trial implementation phase of at least a year, allowing laboratories and technology providers to implement it and provide practical feedback.
