Legislation enabling the roll out of a mandatory system for real-time prescription monitoring to be known as SafeScript has passed Victoria's Parliament.

The Victorian government announced in April 2016 that it would set up its own system, investing almost $30 million, and revealed in August that it would build its own, bypassing the Electronic Reporting and Recording of Controlled Drugs (ERRCD) system that is set to be introduced to the rest of the country.

Unlike the national system, which covers only Schedule 8 controlled drugs, Victoria will also monitor Schedule 4 drugs such as benzodiazepines and Stilnox, as well as codeine.
